Millions Fed: Proven Successes in Agricultural Development

$

0

Humanity has made enormous progress in the past 50 years toward eliminating hunger and malnutrition. Agricultural development has contributed significantly to these gains, while also fostering economic growth and poverty reduction in some of the world's poorest countries. However, progress has slowed in recent years. This makes learning from past successes in agricultural development more urgent than ever. Developed by IFPRI, "Millions Fed: Proven Successes in Agricultural Development" addresses this need, documenting evidence on what works in agriculture.

Experimental Approaches to Understanding Market Segmentation Strategies for New Agricultural Technologies

Making agriculture more productive and efficient is paramount to improving the day-to-day quality of life of poor farmers. However, promising agricultural technologies often are not adopted by poor and marginalized farmers. With scarce public resources available to support agricultural research and extension, the innovation and dissemination process will need to become more efficient and more inclusive of the private sector. At this seminar, David Spielman and Nick Magnan of the International Food Policy Research Institute will present

Setting Investment Priorities for Achieving Poverty Reduction and Food Security

$

Ensuring access to nutritious and healthy food for everybody in the world will become increasingly challenging as resources have become more limited and competition for their use has grown. Public investment must increase to boost food production through innovations and more efficient use of natural resources. However, setting the right priorities is equally important given that returns to different types of investments vary greatly.

Capacity Development for National Agricultural Research Systems: Rethinking USAID's Role

$

National agricultural research systems (NARS) are the backbone of an agricultural innovation system and include all public, semi-public, and private agricultural R&D in a country, including universities, government laboratories, private sector research, and NGO or producer-led research enterprises. The Feed the Future (FTF) Initiative recognizes the importance of agricultural research as a critical input towards achieving food security in the long term. Success in the FTF research strategy will require effective NARS to test and adapt technologies at the country level.

Farmer Preferences for Drought Tolerance in Hybrid Versus Inbred Rice: Evidence from Bihar, India

Recent efforts to develop rice cultivars with drought-tolerance (DT) traits have resulted in the release of several varieties that demonstrate significant resilience to drought stresses. In this paper, we employ discrete choice experiments to examine farmers’ preferences for DT traits and explore heterogeneity in these preferences using primary data collected in rural Bihar, India.

#AskAg Twitter Chat: Knowledge Gaps to Scaling Ag Tech

$

A current call to arms in the development world is to "scale up what works." Though it seems obvious that we should be scaling up the efforts that are working, this is not a simple feat. There are many barriers to scaling up innovative agricultural technology; getting information from research into practice, and from a single test site to full adoption, doesn't happen overnight. How do we make sure the knowledge of "what works" makes it to farmers, policymakers, and implementing partners?

Smallholder Adoption of Integrated Soil Fertility Management

Degraded soils and the lack of sound soil management practices can result in yield loss that affects smallholder farmer livelihoods. To prevent soil degradation, some agricultural development programs promote practices that maintain or replenish soils for long-term income stability of smallholder farmers.

Between 2007 and 2008, world governments made decisions that, in conjunction with extreme weather events, turned an already alarming food supply and demand situation into a global food price crisis. This begs the question: How do governments make food policy decisions?
